Cody Puckett was called up from Pensacola to the Bats yesterday to replace Denis Phipps, who was DL’ed with an ailing right shoulder. Tonight, he will be making his Triple-A debut, batting sixth and playing second base. In 37 games with the Blue Wahoos, he batted .268 with four doubles, seven home runs and 21 RBI. His seven home runs rank fourth in the Southern League. He has hit six home runs in 52 at-bats in May, including three in four games between 5/11 and 5/14.
The 24-year-old Victorville, CA native was taken by the Reds in the eighth round (239th overall) of the 2008 draft and played collegiately at California State, Dominguez Hills. During this past offseason, he played for the Phoenix Desert Dogs in the prestigious Arizona Fall League. He has spent his four professional seasons all over the Reds’ minor league system, making stops in Sarasota, Billings, Dayton, Lynchburg, Carolina, Goodyear, Pensacola and now finally in Louisville.
